How Much Does Private Rehab Cost?
Private rehab in the United States runs from about $10,000 a month for a standard residential program to $30,000 to $60,000 for boutique care, $60,000 to $100,000 at the top tier in Malibu and Southern California, and selected high-price packages at $100,000 to more than $200,000. These planning categories do not establish a US single-client starting price; confirm whether the quoted residence and team serve one person or several. A quote means little until you know which tier it belongs to and what it buys.

The four price tiers, and what each one buys
This guide groups private rehab prices into four tiers. The price gaps between them are large, and so are the differences in what you get.
A single-client month in Los Angeles or Malibu can include a physician, a therapist or two, a nurse, a chef, a driver, and support staff, with their time allocated to one person's plan over 30 days. The quote should specify which staff are assigned, how much time they provide, and whether they also see other clients. At every tier, compare the brochure with the written schedule.

Private rehab cost by state and city
Location can move the price substantially. Compare central Florida and the Malibu coast using the clinical schedule as well as the address. Ranges below are published private-pay rates for 30 days.
Private rehab in Malibu and Los Angeles: $38,000 to $100,000
Malibu's estate homes on the Pacific Coast Highway, ocean-view suites, surf and equine therapy, and celebrity alumni are the picture most people have of luxury rehab. Published rates in 2026 cluster between $38,000 and $60,000 for the mid-tier programs, $53,000 for a shared room and $80,000 for a private room at the best-known estates, and a published shared-program example at $90,000 for a 30-plus-day stay with individual and group treatment. A recognized name on the coast can charge $80,000 for a program with 25 to 30 clients across several properties. The Hollywood Hills and Beverly Hills carry similar pricing without the ocean.
What to check before paying Malibu prices: the census on the day you arrive, licensed individual clinical hours per week, and whether detox happens on the property or in a hospital 40 minutes away.

Private rehab in California outside Malibu: $30,000 to $90,000
Published California luxury-tier rates run $30,000 to $90,000 for 30 days, with most boutique programs between $40,000 and $70,000. Orange County's coast (Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Dana Point) and San Diego's north county price toward the upper half of that range; inland Southern California (Palm Springs, Temecula, Ojai) toward the lower half. The address alone does not tell you whether a higher quote includes more clinical time, different staffing, or more expensive accommodation.
Private rehab in Utah: $30,000 to $60,000
Sundance, Park City, and the Wasatch Front host some of the country's oldest luxury programs, priced at roughly $1,000 to $2,000 a day, or $30,000 to $60,000 a month, for mountain lodges with small groups and outdoor programming. Some of these Utah planning figures are below the California examples on this page. That price difference does not establish equivalent staffing; compare the licensed clinical appointments, overnight cover, travel, and continuing care in each written quote.
Private rehab in Arizona: $40,000 to $75,000
Tucson and Wickenburg are home to the large destination programs known for trauma work and co-occurring conditions; published rates run $40,000 to $75,000 for a 30-day stay, with some quoting five-week signature programs at $44,000 to $60,000. Scottsdale and Sedona add boutique and executive programs at $30,000 to $60,000.
Private rehab in Florida: $15,000 to $80,000
Florida prices range widely by region. Basic residential care in central and north Florida runs $15,000 to $25,000; mid-tier programs in Tampa, Orlando, and Jacksonville $25,000 to $35,000; and South Florida (Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Naples, Miami) $35,000 to $45,000 for premium programs, with beachfront luxury and executive programs reaching $60,000 to $80,000. Palm Beach County also has a deep supply of sober-living and step-down options, which affects total cost over a 90-day plan.
Private rehab elsewhere in the US
Texas, Colorado, the Northeast, the Pacific Northwest, and the mountain states have fewer luxury-tier programs and do not publish rates the way California, Arizona, and Florida do. Programs there price by the tiers above: standard private residential at $10,000 to $30,000, boutique at $30,000 to $60,000, and a small number of estate and one-on-one programs priced individually by staffing. Ask any program outside the big markets for its census and licensed clinical hours before comparing its price with a Malibu or Arizona quote; a lower price with the same staffing is a better deal, not a lesser program.
Private rehab abroad: where the money goes further, and where it doesn't
Private rehab in Switzerland: CHF 70,000 a month to CHF 117,300 a week
Zurich's lakeside villas and the clinics around Geneva and the Alps publish the highest fees on this page. Published 2026 rates: premium residential care from about CHF 70,000 a month; single-client care at the two named providers: Paracelsus Recovery lists CHF 110,000 a week and the Kusnacht Practice starts at CHF 117,300 a week, which makes four weeks CHF 440,000 and CHF 469,200 respectively; and one Zurich clinic that publishes a one-client-only model at CHF 320,000 to 500,000 a month. The fees are all-inclusive of treatment, villa, staff, and meals; travel, unrelated medical care, and continuing care are extra. What they sell is medical privacy law, multilingual clinical teams, and very small programs. Ask each for the written frequency and duration of contact with every licensed practitioner, and compare it with a strong US program's schedule before deciding what the premium buys. Get your insurer's answer on the specific program before assuming anything is reimbursed.
Private rehab in Thailand: $8,000 to $20,000 a month
Chiang Mai and Phuket have become the most popular international rehab destinations for Americans, Australians, and Britons. Standard private programs run $8,000 to $12,000 a month; the luxury tier, with resort settings, private villas, on-site medical staff, and hospital partnerships, runs $12,000 to $20,000, with a few above $25,000. Compare a Thai program and a US program using their own weekly schedules: individual appointment hours, clinician roles, group sessions, and support between visits. A lower published fee does not establish that more individual therapy is included. What you give up: distance from family, a foreign medical system for anything the program cannot handle, and a continuing-care handoff across an ocean. What you gain, besides price, is distance from the people and places attached to the problem.
Private rehab in Bali, Mexico, Spain, and Portugal
Bali, Mexico's Pacific and Caribbean coasts, and the Spanish and Portuguese coasts (Marbella, Mallorca, Ibiza, the Algarve) all host private and luxury programs, and none of those markets publishes rates consistently enough to state a range. In our reading of their published material, Bali prices near Thailand, Mexico between Thailand and the US standard tier, and Spain's luxury programs near the US boutique tier, with a few single-client villas priced like Switzerland. Get a written quote for a stated period and compare it on the same lines as a US quote. Why the same price buys different things
Two programs at $75,000 a month can deliver completely different treatment. One has 25 clients across five estates, a schedule built around groups, and two individual sessions a week; the other has four clients, a clinician for each, and daily individual clinical time. The brochures look the same. The way to tell them apart is to ask three questions and put the answers on paper:
- How many clients are you treating right now, and which parts of my day would I share? Census is the single biggest driver of what your money buys.
- How many licensed clinical hours are in a typical week, by role? Therapist, psychiatrist, physician, nurse. Not coaches, not "24-hour support."
- What is in the fee, and what is billed by someone else? Detox, psychiatry, labs, medication, transport, and continuing care are the usual extras.
Compare the total fee and licensed clinical hours over the same period. For a four-week example, $60,000 divided by 32 clinical hours is $1,875 per hour; $120,000 divided by 120 clinical hours is $1,000 per hour. These ratios include the whole quoted package, not just the cost of appointments. They do not measure quality, but they help reveal differences in the services included.
What a private rehab quote should include
Ask for the quote in writing for a stated period with these lines separated:
- Residence and meals
- Licensed clinical hours per week, by role
- Medical and nursing coverage, and where detox happens
- Psychiatric evaluation and follow-up
- Medication, laboratory work, and drug testing
- Family sessions
- Transport, including airport and outside appointments
- Continuing care after discharge: what is included and for how long
- Deposit, refund terms for early departure, and the rate for extensions

Anything not on the list is an assumption, and assumptions are where the surprise bills come from. If you are paying without insurance, federal rules entitle you to a Good Faith Estimate from each provider that bills you when you schedule at least three business days ahead.
Private room vs private program
Programs price the supplement by the day; the one published comparison at a Malibu estate is $53,000 a month for a shared room against about $80,000 for a private one. Groups, meals, activities, transport, and the clinical team's attention stay shared. A private program changes the schedule itself. Does insurance cover private rehab?
Coverage depends on the plan, provider, services, network status, and authorization requirements. Price tier alone does not determine it.

- Standard and boutique programs ($10,000 to $60,000) often bill insurance. Many are in network with major PPO plans, and out-of-network benefits can reimburse a meaningful share of the clinical and residential fee after the deductible, calculated against the plan's allowed amount rather than the program's charge. HMO plans generally do not cover out-of-network care except in an emergency. Expect to need prior authorization for a planned residential stay; it may cover only specified services and dates, so confirm when it ends and who requests an extension.
- Top-tier luxury programs ($60,000 to $100,000): establish the insurance and private-pay portions before committing. Some provide superbills for out-of-network claims on the clinical portion; ask the insurer which accommodation, hospitality, or dedicated-staffing charges are excluded.
- For a single-client program or care abroad, confirm benefits before relying on reimbursement. Ask the insurer about the provider, location, services, authorization, and any out-of-network or international exclusions.

Put both quotes on the same basis: length of stay, licensed clinical hours by role, medical support, accommodation and extras. Common questions about private rehab cost
Is a $100,000-a-month rehab worth it?
The fee needs an explanation in the proposed care. Compare its written clinical schedule with those of less expensive programs, including individual therapy and the time you will spend with a doctor or psychiatrist. If the schedule is no more robust, ask what justifies the premium. If the answer is the residence and amenities, know that is what you are paying for.
Why is rehab in Malibu so expensive?
Real estate, reputation, and the coastal location all contribute to the price. A beachfront estate adds a property cost to the fee. A higher fee does not by itself establish more clinical care; compare the staffing and written schedule with an inland program's quote.
Is rehab abroad safe?
For a program in Thailand or Switzerland, verify the license, accreditation claims, professional credentials, and medical partner before booking a flight. Check the emergency arrangements and the continuing-care plan for the handoff home. Country and price tier alone do not establish clinical capability.
What are some lower-cost private rehab options?
Standard private residential programs and intensive outpatient care, not the luxury residences. Published California examples give $10,000 to $30,000 for 30 days of standard residential care and $5,000 to $10,000 for an eight-to-twelve-week intensive outpatient course. Those are examples, not floors. Compare options that can provide the level of care you need, and compare their written clinical schedules, including individual therapy and medical and psychiatric appointments. A lower price does not by itself mean less contact with licensed practitioners, and you may find the cheaper program is not the thinner one.
Do private rehabs offer payment plans?
Many do, through third-party healthcare financing or scheduled payments, and a few offer scholarships or reduced fees. Ask before assuming the sticker price is the only price.
